Freelance Writing Cafe: Why did you decide to start freelance writing?
Marina Girgis: I started freelance writing because I wanted more freedom and to be able to work from anywhere in the world.

What has been your biggest lesson learned so far?
My biggest lesson learned so far has been that inspiration will hit me randomly (very randomly!) so I can not wait around for it to start writing, I have to be proactive about creating content by sticking to my content calendar.

What’s your favorite app, tool, or tip for productivity?
I love using the Notion App on my iPhone to help me categorize my to-do list. This helped me not feel overwhelmed when tackling my personal goals for my blog and client work.

Favorite place to travel—and why?
Colombia was one of the most beautiful places I’ve been! Something about that country is so inviting and enchanting. The people were the kindest I’ve met in my 5 years of solo travel.

Do you have a go-to mantra or quote that keeps you inspired?
Yes! “Luck is where opportunity meets preparation.”

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?
A lot of people don’t know that I have been moving around all my life and lived in 3 countries! I was born in Egypt, grew up in Kuwait, moved back to Egypt for a few years and have been living in the US for 6 years now.

What’s your favorite hot beverage to sip while working?
It’s definitely chai. Hot or iced.

STOP! These outreach mistakes are costing you clie STOP! These outreach mistakes are costing you clients...
🚫 STOP talking about yourself in the first sentence: You'll lose their attention instantly with cliche lines about how experienced you are. Instead, open with something about THEM. Their company, their project, their goals. That's how you keep them reading instead of deleting your email.

🚫 STOP stuffing your first message with too much information: The goal is to start the conversation and take that first step toward building a relationship. If your first email is a full-on pitch, your outreach becomes transactional. Your potential client has no reason to care yet, so why are you talking numbers?

🚫 STOP offering them everything under the sun: Too many offerings will prove that you don't actually know what they want or need. What is your client looking for right now and how can you address that need with a specific service or package? Make it easy to say yes instead of overwhelming them.

🚫 STOP sending a link to your website: From a client's POV, a generic website link is one of the most annoying things to receive. Who has time to sort through pages and find relevant samples? While you're proud of your website, just link them to one specific page that contains the samples they need to see.

What's your experience? What other tips would you give your fellow freelancers?

⠀
Remember: The work needs to get done, obviously! But freelancing allows us to decide when and how. Don't force yourself to work in ways that don't work for you.⠀
